#Where to go: Orvieto

Spesso mi stupisco di come piccole distanze possano diventare così insormontabili quando si è assorbiti dalla vita di tutti i giorni.

Ma ieri non è stato così, ieri è stato uno di quei giorni in cui si decide cosa fare dall’inizio alla fine seguendo solo l’istinto e diretti verso ciò che di più bello c’è.

Una mattina frizzante, un vento gelido e il duomo di Orvieto, un meraviglioso esempio di architettura religiosa e capolavoro del gotico.

Orvieto, una città in cui non ero mai stata, ma che volevo visitare da tempo.

Sorge su una rupe di tufo in Umbria ed è veramente carica di storia.

Dal Duomo la meta è stata la Fortezza di Albornoz, che offre la possibilità di ammirare un panorama molto suggestivo.

Ma ciò che più mi incuriosiva era un’altra architettura, di quelle prodigiose e che suscitano la domanda: ma come è possibile?

Sto parlando del Pozzo di San Patrizio,  che prese il nome da un misterioso luogo in Irlanda, la leggenda irlandese racconta che San Patrizio era solito accompagnare le persone che volevano redimersi sul fondo della caverna da cui si poteva osservare l’inferno, risaliti in superficie avrebbero guadagnato il paradiso.

Il pozzo di Orvieto è stato così rinominato in quanto ricordava la caverna irlandese.

Venne realizzato nel 1500, profondo 53 metri, serviva a garantire l’acqua in caso di assedio alla città.

Ho fotografato sia l’inizio che la fine, decisamente sconsigliato a chi ha problemi di vertigini.

La giornata non è finita così, pioggia con il sole e verso una nuova meta,

ma questa è un’altra storia.

But yesterday wasn’t in this way, yesterday was one of those days where you decide what to do from the beginning to the end, just following the instinct and directed toward what is most beautiful.

A chilly morning, a cold wind and the cathedral of Orvieto, a wonderful example of religious architecture and a Gothic masterpiece.

Orvieto, a city where I had never been, but I wanted to visit for a long time.

It is located on a rock of tuff  in Umbria and it is really very full of history.

From the Cathedral the goal was the Albornoz Fortress, which offers the chance to admire a truly impressive view.

But what most intrigued me was another architecture, those prodigious that you can only ask: how is it possible?

I’m talking about the Pozzo of San Patrizio, built in 1500, and which took its name from a mysterious place in Ireland, the Irish legend tells that St. Patrick used to bring people who wanted to redeem himself at the bottom of the cavern from which you could observe the hell, back on the top they would have gained heaven.

Well the place in Orvieto was so renamed because it reminded the Irish cave.

It was built in 1500, 53 meters deep, it was used to ensure the water in case of siege to the town.

I photographed both the beginning and the end, definitely not recommended for those who suffer of vertigo.

But the day is not over so, with the sun and rain looking for  a new goal,

but that’s another story.
